About Jasmine Rice

The official name of Jasmine Rice is THAI HOM MALI RICE, but sometimes it were called "fragrant rice", "scent rice" or "aromatic rice".

Thai Hom Mali rice is named Hom for its gentle unique aroma and Mali for the jasmine-white appearance. This unique variety is characterized by a long grain that is silky smooth and pure white, finishing with a soft texture when cooked. The fragrance is similar to that of the ubiquitous pandanus plant.

It is also very nutritious. Thai Ham Mali rice contains high fibre, vitamins B1, B2, niacin, carbohydrates and protein but contains no gluten, so it is non-allergenic. It is also rich in minerals such as iron, calcium and phosphorous.

Hom Mali is recognized as Thailand’s premium-grade rice and most precious grain. It is popular not only among Thai people but also in foreign markets. Thailand is the only country in the world to produce this top-quality crop, which has a reputation for its fragrance, unique taste, and cooking texture. When cooked, Hom Mali becomes soft and appetizing. Thais know jasmine rice as “Khao Hom Mali,” which was formerly referred to as “Khao Khao Dok Mali,” which translates into English as white jasmine flower rice. Thailand has registered the trademark of this rice variety “Thai Hom Mali rice” to protect its claim as the origin of Hom Mali.

This variety of rice can only be grown in the hot, sunny climates of Southeast Asia. Demand for Hom Mali rice is on the increase, but production is still limited. Thailand produces about three million metric tonnes of Hom Mali a year. Out of this volume, two million tonnes are exported, and the remaining one million tonnes are consumed locally.

The Northeast is a major area for the cultivation of Hom Mali rice, especially at Thung Kula Ronghai, or Weeping Prairie, which spreads over five provinces, namely Surin, Roi Et, Maha Sarakham, Si Sa Ket, and Yasothon.
